'When we walk to the edge of all the light we have and take a step into the darkness of the unknown, we must believe one of two things will happen ~ there will be something solid for us to stand upon, or we will be taught to fly.' ~Anonymous

I hope each of you had a wonderful summer and survived this summer's heat! Kids are now off to school, and as Fall arrives we look forward to the shedding of old things and look forward to the new life of Spring. Texas residents certainly know of the uncertainty of Texas weather and how quickly changes come with our weather.

The same is true for our profession. We must find a way to prepare for the changes we will experience with Healthcare Reform. We are, daily, faced with changes in technology; the changes new graduates bring to the clinical arena; and facing the challenges of staffing issues, fluctuations in patient census, patient expectations, the nursing shortage, our shortage of nursing instructors and clinical practice based on evidence, and based on nursing research. We also face change in Texas with implementation of Public Report of healthcare acquired infections. I am encouraged by most change. Most change helps us practice safer, more efficiently, smarter and with more diversity.

As we embrace these changes in healthcare, I hope you all will join me in welcoming new members; Carolyn Cagle, Denise Cauble, Tammy Eades, Shakyryn Napier and Diane Wright to your Board of Directors for Texas Nurses' Association, District 3.

And please also join me in recognizing the unselfish years of service to area nurses of our departing Board of Directors; Sandi McDermott, Suzy Lockwood, Sharon Ransom, Mary Alice Stam. These individuals have been instrumental in watching out for the interest of all District 3 Nurses. Please take a moment to review the "What Ifs" brochure, at the next District meeting, to learn about the improvements these Board Members have been responsible for in the interest of Texas Nurses.

I hope each of you will take advantage of the coming year's interesting CE programs. I look forward to meeting and sharing ideas with you.
